Timeline
Timelines track when events in your canon and story chapters occur. They let you organize content chronologically and focus on specific eras when generating media.
What it does
A timeline divides your world's history into periods — eras, seasons, acts, or any other time-based grouping. You assign canon entries and story chapters to these periods so everything has a clear chronological context. You can also advance the timeline to mark progression and launch new content.
When to use it
- You want to establish when events happen relative to each other
- You need to filter content by era for focused work or media generation
- You are generating a codex document for a specific time period
- You want to advance your world forward to begin a new phase
How to use it
- Create timeline periods — Define the eras or phases of your world (e.g., "Ancient Era", "Modern Day", "Season 1")
- Assign canon — Place each canon entry into the period when it occurs
- Assign story chapters — Link chapters to their timeline periods
- Filter by period — Focus your view on a specific era for writing or generation
- Advance the timeline — Progress your world forward to launch new media or experiences
Tips and best practices
- Timeline periods can represent anything time-based: historical eras, book chapters, campaign sessions, semesters
- Use the current timeline focus to scope codex generation to a specific era
- Advancing the timeline is a good way to mark milestones in your project
